Connect Group guide: Light of the World

The Light of the World – Lars Due-Christensen

If you missed hearing this talk in person you can listen again here.

Summary

The light is a main theme throughout the Bible. It shows itself in contrast to the darkness. It was the first thing God created thus paving way for the rest of creation. Jesus is the light, which means that He is God and that He has authority over any kind of darkness. We come from Him, and we belong to Him. Therefore, our identity and authority is found in this relationship. Authority is based on identity and identity is shaped by belonging.

Reading: John 8:12

Discussion Questions

Use some of the following questions to help you discuss the themes from this passage:

  • Do you identify with the idea that we live in a time where many of us experience a crisis of authority and identity? How do you experience this in your own life?
  • Jesus promises us that when we follow Him we will never walk in darkness. Have you had experiences of how encounters with Jesus or decisions to follow Him have allowed light to shine on the inside?
  • Following Him means holding on to His word, holding on to worship and holding on to our testimony. Have you had experiences of the power of those three things? What do you find challenging about holding on to these three right now?

Prayer

Spend some time praying for one another, perhaps focussing on some of the areas of need you have each shared about.

Notes for leaders

This subject may require some follow up, so you could point people towards resources like STEPS, Alpha, or our Pastoral Support team. (Alpha is starting soon! Visit our courses page for more details).
