The Spirit Filled Life: Peace and Strength

Summary

We are entering a new season. With Summer approaching, restrictions lifting, and the positive effects of the vaccine taking hold, there are plenty of reasons for hope. But our prayer for this season is not that we would simply return to normal, rather, like the disciples in Acts 9:31, we hope that emerging from lockdown will bring us into a season of peace, where we will experience strengthening and comfort from the Holy Spirit, and that God would add many people to His Kingdom. 

I don’t know how you feel about coming out of lockdown? For some it can be exciting, whereas others may feel fearful or uncertain about it. This practice includes some questions for personal reflection, followed by time for discussion and prayer.  

Personal Reflection (10 mins) 

Take 10 minutes by yourself to reflect on the following questions. Some of them may be easier to answer than others. If you don’t know how to answer them, ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand your emotions and thoughts. While you do this, you may want to turn your screen off, or listen to some music. 

• What am I excited about, as we come out of lockdown? Personally and spiritually?
• What am I nervous about, as we come out of lockdown? Personally and spiritually?
• If I could choose one prayer for my personal life, what would it be? 
• If I could choose one prayer for our church, what would it be?

Discussion and Prayer (15 mins)

In pairs or threes, discuss some of your answers to these questions. Be as honest as you feel able to. Once everyone has shared, spend some time praying for one another and for the church. 

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, 

As we emerge from lockdown,
And look ahead to this next season,
Would you fill us afresh with your Spirit,
And give us a new lease of life. 

We need you to comfort us,
From the pain of lockdown.
We need you to embolden us,
Where lockdown has robbed us of courage.

We need you to revive us,
Where lockdown has sapped our strength.
We need you to excite us,
Where lockdown has stolen our hope. 

As the world emerges from lockdown,
And looks ahead to this next season,
Would it find itself staring into your face,
And in repentance and faith,
Take hold of  your gift of eternal life.
