For people on low incomes, a sudden crisis – redundancy, benefit delay, illness or an unexpected bill – can mean going hungry. Every day parents skip meals to feed their children and people are forced to choose between paying rent or eating.
Vauxhall Foodbank exists to provide emergency support for those in need. We collect non-perishable food from churches, schools and businesses in the local community, as well as outside local supermarkets. Our partners in schools, children’s centres, housing associations and charities as well as local GPs, health visitors and church pastoral workers give Foodbank vouchers to people they assess to be in crisis. The client then exchanges the voucher for 3 days’ worth of food (10 balanced meals) at our Foodbank Café based in the Vauxhall Christian Centre, 105 Tyers St, SE11 5HS.
As well as free food, our clients can expect a friendly welcome, a listening ear and someone to pray with them if they would like. Wherever possible we signpost our clients to other services and agencies that can help them deal with the root causes of their crisis.
