Jesus Calms the Storm - Kids at home Sunday 10th May

Today, we are going to learn how mighty and powerful Jesus is and remember that we need to keep putting ALL of our faith and trust in Him as He can do ANYTHING!

Sometimes we might be faced with something that seems a bit too scary and we might forget that Jesus is by our side or we might worry that this is too big even for Jesus! But today’s story reminds us that NOTHING is too big for Jesus! We don’t need to be afraid, even about the things that seem really big and scary! Jesus is ALWAYS with us!

Worship

Let’s start with some worship! Feel free to sing and dance or just watch and listen, Jesus doesn’t mind HOW we worship, He just loves it when we spend time with Him and sing His praises!

Some important points to remember from the story…

  • Even though things can seem scary in our lives, we can always have faith and be sure that Jesus is right beside us and is going to help us! Some things will be too big for us (like the storm in the story) but they will never be too big for Jesus!
  • Sometimes we might forget to trust Jesus and ask for His help, we might forget how powerful and how mighty He is! (Remember, the wind and the waves recognised Jesus’ voice and they obeyed him!) But we should always remember that He is with us and put our faith and trust in Him!

Some things to talk to your family about…

  • Can you remember any other stories about Jesus? Why not ask each member of your family/household to try and share a story that they know about Jesus?
  • Have you ever been on a boat before? How do you think you would feel if you were on a boat and there were great, big waves all around you? Do you think that you could trust Jesus and ask Him for help?
  • Is there anything that you can think of right now that seems a little scary? Is there anything that you feel worried about? We could talk to Jesus about that today!

Memory Verse

‘When I am afraid, I put my trust in you’. Psalm 56:3

Life looks a little different to ‘normal’ right now, doesn’t it? Did you know that we all get scared? This memory verse reminds us that we will sometimes feel afraid! Sometimes it feels a little like we’re in that boat that Jesus’ friends were in and there are lots of scary waves and we don’t know what to do. So, to help you remember just how much God loves you and that you can put your trust in Him and ask Jesus for help, why don’t you write down or tell your family one thing you might be nervous or scared about, and then write our memory verse beside it, or you can just try saying the memory verse out loud!

You can shout it, whisper it, sing it, whatever you like! If you can’t think of anything that you are nervous about right now, why don’t you think or write about some things that God has done for you and why you love Him? Maybe there has been a time where you have felt afraid and you’ve trusted God and then felt better?

Prayer time

Was there anything that you thought of or shared with your family when you were asked if you were worried or scared? Have you had the chance to talk to Jesus about them yet? Shall we give it a go? Jesus really wants to give us his peace today (and everyday!)

He wants to remind us that we don’t need to feel worried or afraid as He is by our side.  We can talk to Him about anything! If you just want to tell Him that you love Him or something about your day, that’s brilliant too! Remember, we don’t need to say fancy or long prayers for Jesus to listen to us, He just wants us to talk to Him and tell Him what is in our hearts and what we are feeling!

Dear Jesus,

Thank you that you care SO much about us! I think it’s amazing when I read about all of the wonderful things that you’ve done and how you’ve helped so many people. Sometimes though, I do feel worried about some things or a bit scared. Next time I feel scared or worried, please could you help me to remember this amazing story of you calming the wind and the waves and helping your friends in the boat. Please help me to ask you for help and trust you, no matter what!

Amen

Again, feel free to use the prayer boards that you created a few weeks ago. Why don’t you think of a prayer for each envelope? Or, if you haven’t had chance to make your prayer board yet, why not give it a go this week?

Craft time

There are a few different options for crafts and/or activities today, so you can choose whatever you like or have a go at all of them! The main thing to remember as we make these crafts is that Jesus is always with us and nothing is too big for Him to handle! He wants us to know that today and everyday, and for us to know His PEACE! He doesn’t want us to worry about anything or ever feel scared! He loves us so much!

Calm the storm!

  • Fill the sink or a larger tub with water (as if it is the sea) and you could use tupperware (or a toy boat if you have one!) as a boat! You can move the boat around a bit and watch the water splash into the sides! Imagine how it would feel to be in that boat when the waves are big! Also, look how peaceful it is when the water is still! How amazing is Jesus? He did that in a real storm!!
  • If you have an empty plastic/glass bottle (or some other sort of container), you could fill about 3/4 with water and 1/4 with vegetable oil. If you have some, add a few drops of blue food colouring in and some salt. The oil and water will separate in the bottle. If you have anything plastic that you are about to recycle (e.g. empty hummus pot!), you can cut a small ‘boat’ out and drop it into the bottle. You should be able to watch your little boat float. If you shake the bottle side to side (very gently) you can see the boat rock back and forth as though in a storm!
