A prayer to start a new year
“You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths drip with abundance.” Ps. 65:11
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lam. 3:22-23
“And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also, he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Rev. 21:5
At the start of a new year we may feel a mixture of things: we might feel hope and excitement for what’s to come, or we may feel pressure to set new goals, make resolutions and form new habits. While these things can be great, it’s important that we take time to pray and invite God into this process. It can be helpful to reflect on the past year, thank God for what went well, and for being with you through the challenges. You can also ask Him to speak to you about His plans for your life, and remind yourself of His faithfulness and goodness.
You might want to pray the following prayer slowly, one line at a time, and journal as you go along, noting down what you are grateful for in the past year, and what you would like God to do in your life this year.
Thank you for this new year.
I dedicate it to you.
As I reflect on the last year,
Help me to see Your faithfulness and goodness,
And Your presence that was with me every step.
Help me to see where you were working in my life,
And in the world around me.
Thank you for all the things you’ve carried me through;
The good days, which I celebrate,
And the hard days, which remind me how much I need You
And rely on Your presence filling me every day.
Would You fill my heart with hope for the year ahead,
And when I feel weary, discouraged or uncertain,
Help me look to You for strength.
Jesus, You are the same yesterday, today and forever.
Thank you that Your goodness and mercy follow me
All the days of my life.
Help me to stay close to you,
To put you first in my life,
And to let your healing power transform my heart.
I choose to put my trust in You today,
And I delight in Your promise that You are making all things new.
In Jesus’ name,
- As you think and pray, you could write down anything you think God may be speaking to you about for the year ahead. He may bring scriptures or promises to mind, and these are great to remember.
- If there are good habits you want to form this year, or ways in which you want to grow spiritually, why not tell a trusted friend or someone in your Connect Group? It could be helpful to have someone who can check in with you every now and then to see how you’re doing, and keep you accountable. We’re not made to journey alone!
